I had to write this speech for English. i got a really got grade. :D
Animals are everywhere, whether they are warm-blooded, or cold-blooded, scaly, feathered, or furry, they all have feelings, and they all deserve to be treated with respect. The human race has evolved beyond their fellow animals, and believes it is their right to exploit those who can’t speak for themselves. What gives us the right? Just because we are able to build, and create, doesn’t mean we can make slaves of the so-called ‘lesser’ animals.
Humans have learned to industrialize like no other animal in the world. We have perfected the way goods are manufactured and produced to obtain the greatest amount possible with the least amount of effort. This means stuffing animals into close quarters, and unclean environments to collect the natural products of animals. Look at how we treat Chickens! They are crammed into cages so small that they can barely lift their wings. Over 9 million chickens are raised on factory farms, were they are bred and drugged to grow so large so fast that neither their legs, nor organs can support them [Chickens]. Heart disease and leg deformities are common among these poor birds (as if they didn’t have enough problems already.) Along with all the birth defects they suffer, they have to put up with the humans who can’t find the decency to actually treat them right, even on their way to the slaughter house. It’s their last day alive, the least people could do is handle them right. Broken wings and legs often occur due to rough handling, and a million birds don’t even make it to the slaughter house, due to the stress caused by rough handling. A million wasted birds that lived a terrible life just to die before they even fulfilled the purpose they were bred for.
Chickens aren’t the only farm animals being thrown in too-small cages and being forced to stand in their own feces. Over 97 percent of pigs in America are raised on factory farms, were they have miserable lives until they are shipped to the slaughter house, where they are dipped in scalding water to remove their hair [Pigs]. The lucky ones are dead by this time.
Not only are animals denied what nature has rightfully given them, they are also forced to test things that are unnatural to them. Like cosmetics, and medicine that we have concocted to make our live better, not the animals. There is no way of knowing how many animals are being tested in American laboratories today, because not all laboratories document all the animals that they are killing with products that they are testing. It is estimated that over a million animals die in laboratories each year [Animal Testing], and that’s just death. Think of the ones that have been permanently maimed, and blinded. Animals are different from humans, mice are not little men! They do not have the same DNA as people, therefore react to chemicals differently. We can clone human skin so why are we still torturing animals? We know that cigarettes are harmful so why do we continue to force pigs and monkeys to smoke? Animals feel pain, just like we do. They feel lonely, just like we do. They feel sad, just like we do. The only things they don’t do like us are purposely cause harm to others.
Domesticated animals are loved by many and treated like family. Cats, dogs, birds, and rodents all have a place in the hearts of people. If dogs are a man’s best friend, then why is man killing dogs? Every year more than 3 million cats, birds, dogs, and rabbits are euthanized because they have nowhere to go[Animal Testing]. Those that do have somewhere to go might find the place unsuitable, and unloving. Many owners don’t take care of their animals properly and throw them out on the streets. People are cruel to animals simply to be cruel to them. Cats are nailed to trees, and dogs are bludgeoned to death with baseball bats. Dogs will love anyone unconditionally, and humans will yell ‘Get away from me you mangy mutt.’
What have animals done to deserve such treatment? Have they caused wars? Have they committed genocide? Do they enslave other races? They say its human nature to be envious. It’s human nature to lie, and to cheat and to steal. Never have they said its animal nature. Animals just live life, they do not try to change the environment, and they do not try to change themselves. They go with the flow. Humans on the other hand will knock down anything that stands in their way, including forests and mountains. They will hide who they are, especially from themselves. Humans are not the better race, if anything they are the most backwards race around.
Animals are treated unfairly, and they are taken advantage of. They are not able to protect themselves, but does that mean we can rule over their lives, and force them to do things for our own enjoyment? Do you really think that animals enjoy being stuck in a zoo, were little children throw things at them? Do you not think that, that dog you are yelling at knows that you are mad, and will do whatever it can to make you love it again? Animals have feelings; they just can’t express them like we can. ‘Oh but, ‘Scientific studies’ have proven that animals don’t feel like us!’ And how do scientists know that? One can only get so much information from pretty little charts of brain activity. Scientists have no way of knowing how an animal feels. How they feel when we come in and steal them away from their homes, or take a rolled up news paper to their nose. Unless Scientists come up with some magical machine that lets us communicate effectively with the creatures around us, I will not take what they say about animals seriously.
